FELIPE BARRAL

Felipe Barral is a multimedia storyteller who expresses himself in many ways –through his audiovisual works (documentaries, TV shows, films, digital & social media videos and video/art installations), his music (both as a musician and composer), his art (painting and photography) and his writing (poetry, short stories, scripts and fiction). He is also a journalist with a Masters degree in Philosophy.

He is a bilingual and bicultural producer creating content both in English and Spanish. For the last 20 years, Felipe has been producing outstanding high quality storytelling at CNN, starting in 1997 while he was still studying journalism in college in Chile. Most recently, Felipe worked as Supervising Features Producer at the CNN Vision team in Atlanta, creating special and sponsored programming for CNN en Español and CNN International. Within the unit, he led and managed a team of storytellers in Atlanta and Miami with passion, inspiring and empowering them to fulfill their own creative potential. He also worked in several countries with colleagues, anchors, correspondents and freelancers to get high quality stories on TV, digital and social media. At the same time, he managed budgets and financial forecasts for different shows. Felipe is also the Co-Founder, CEO and Executive Producer/Director of his own production company, IGNI Productions, and their online channel for the arts thegchannel.com.

Felipe is an Emmy award-winning producer, and has received several awards including: an Emmy Award in 2016 for the Destinos Cuba show on CNN en Español; two Sentinel Awards in 2015 and 2016 for the Vive la Salud show on CNN en Español; the Dupont–Columbia Award for CNN’s coverage of the 2006 Asian Tsunami; the Peabody Award for CNN’s coverage of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina; and the Peabody Award for CNN’s coverage of the presidential primary campaign and debate in 2008. Lately he has been a guest speaker in film & TV production conferences.

Felipe has taught his “Creative Production Philosophy & Style” to producers, reporters and colleagues at CNN en Español, CNN International and HLN; and he also teaches it to children and young storytellers in an international school in Atlanta, which led him to be recognized with Time Warner’s Richard D. Parsons Community Impact Award in 2014.

Felipe is also an independent filmmaker, producer, director, photographer, musician, artist and writer). He has released 7 short films (The Book of LifeInhabitPIXELDesireDust House, touchME: Dida and Imbued); short and long format documentaries (including Louvre Atlanta); 3 books of poetry (MúrberonEl Libro de Isamar and Aion); has composed several original scores for silent films and documentaries (including NosferatuMetropolis and CNN’s Filling the Blank among others); has done several multimedia installations (including Fire Woman among others); and has performed live both in Chile and the United States.

He started freelancing for CNN en Español in Chile in 1997, while he was still at the university studying Journalism. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as a Field Producer both in Chile and Argentina. In 2001 CNN brought him to the United States of America and he became a CNN staff member working as an Assignment Editor. In 2006 he was promoted to Assignment Editor II & Producer. In 2009 he became a Features Producer, in 2011 he was promoted to Senior Features Producer working on the Special Projects unit for CNN International and CNN en Español, and in 2015 he was promoted to Supervising Features Producer in the CNN Vision team. In 2014 Felipe also became a U.S. citizen.

Between 2003 and 2012 Felipe produced and hosted the live weekly segment Juego de Palabras in the show Encuentro on CNN en Español. And between 2006 and 2012 Felipe produced, directed, hosted, filmed and edited more than 300 Juego de Palabras packages and 4 special shows focused on arts, culture and entertainment.

Since 2009, Felipe produced, relaunched and supervised several shows for CNN en Español, including: UrbanoVive el GolfVive el Golf with Lorena Ochoa, Al GalopeJuego de PalabrasDestinos VerdePatricia Janiot PresentaVive la Salud con la Dra. Felipe also has co-produced and produced shows for CNN International, including Winning Post and Living Golf, and stories for segments like One Square MeterTransformations and Eco Solutions. In 2010 Felipe produced, directed, filmed (second camera) and wrote the acclaimed Alzheimer’s documentary “Filling the Blank” for CNN International’s World Untold Stories show. He also did a version in Spanish for CNN en Español. Both premiered worldwide in 2011.

In 2011 Felipe also produced, directed and wrote the special documentary film “Crescendo – la música es vida” (Crescedo – why music is life), the first time CNN en Español blended fiction with reality in a documentary/film style. The film was released in 500 movie theaters in the U.S. before being broadcasted on CNN en Español.

Felipe has produced several special shows and news coverages for CNN en Español, including: CNN en Español’s 20th Anniversary Los Influyentes shows and vignettes in 2017; the Chavez Legacy documentary in 2013 (that also was done in English for CNN International); CNN en Español’s 15th Anniversary show in 2012; the specials Latinos en AcciónLa Familia de Hoy and Impacta tu Mundo in 2011; the series “Colombia Contrastes” (an in-depth look at Colombia); and “Ser Negro en las Americas” (the Spanish version of CNN’s Black in America) in 2008. He also produced, directed and wrote in 2006 the documentary “373 Días en Cautiverio” (about a Colombian woman being in captivity for 373 days).

Before arriving to Atlanta in 2001, Felipe produced many stories in Chile and organized coverages like the 1998 Summit of the Americasthe arrest of Augusto Pinochet in London in 1998 and his return to Chile, as well as the presidential elections in 2000. Before that, he went to Argentina several times, and produced the coverage of the Millennium and the Y2K in Buenos Aires in 1999, working with former main anchor Jorge Gestoso.

GIOCONDA SECCHI

Gioconda has a Master in Philosophy and studied Philosophy and Political Sciences in Chile. She studied photography with well-known photographer Bob Borowicz in Santiago de Chile. She worked as Director of Photography in Felipe Barral’s book of poetry & photography “Múrberon, el Verdadero Papel de la Poesía” (“Múrberon, the True Paper of Poetry”, 1998). She was a collaborator for “El Metropolitano” newspaper interviewing intellectual and artists in 2000. Along with Felipe Barral, she continues to be the Executive Editor of Édak Magazine. She currently also works as a Spanish Assistant Teacher in the Spanish Department at the Atlanta International School in Atlanta, Georgia.
